“Reconnecting 2016: Reinvigorating Shared Jewish-Latino Roots and Heritage”
Date: September 7-8, 2016
Sunny Isles Beach, (Miami) FL, USA
(Note: The originally scheduled date was May 23-24)
This high-profile conference is dedicated to both enchancing Jewish-Latino relations as well raising awareness regarding the forced converts (Anousim) from the Iberian Peninsula and their descendats. It will feature leading scholars, public figures of both communities, spiritual leaders, heads of Jewish and Latino organizations, artist and authors.
Background: Medieval Iberia witnessed generations of convivencia between the Jews and Christians in Spain and Portugal. Recently, we have witnessed and amazing phenomenon: descendant of Jews from Spain and Portugal who were obliged to convert to Christianity over 500 years ago are awekening and showing genuine interest in their ancestors’ heritage. The co-existence of cultural and ethnic communities, as well as the call for Jews of Iberian origin to reclaim their right to Spanish and Portuguese citizenship, signify new processes with far-reaching ramifications wich need to be addressed for the benefit of all.
A complete invitation and registration information will be issued in April 2016
